IBMYP Mathematics Tutoring Experience
Vic has experience teaching students studying the IB Middle Years Programme (IBMYP) from various international schools and boarding schools. Over the years, he has helped students with different mathematical backgrounds strengthen their understanding of mathematics and prepare for the transition into the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP).
Unlike traditional mathematics curricula that focus heavily on memorisation and routine exercises, IBMYP Mathematics places greater emphasis on conceptual understanding, problem-solving skills, mathematical communication, and real-world application of mathematics. As a result, many students may initially find the IBMYP assessment style unfamiliar and challenging.
One common difficulty among IBMYP students is that they may understand basic procedures but struggle when questions require deeper reasoning, explanation, or the application of multiple concepts together. Some students also find it difficult to adapt to the Criterion-based assessment system used in IBMYP Mathematics.
Through long-term teaching experience, Vic helps students build stronger mathematical foundations while also improving logical thinking, problem-solving ability, and confidence in handling IBMYP-style questions.
Understanding IBMYP Mathematics
IBMYP Mathematics is assessed using four criteria:
- Criterion A: Knowing and Understanding
- Criterion B: Investigating Patterns
- Criterion C: Communicating
- Criterion D: Applying Mathematics in Real-Life Contexts
Many students are familiar with solving routine questions, but may struggle particularly with Criteria B, C, and D because these areas require students to explain mathematical reasoning clearly and apply mathematics in unfamiliar situations.
Therefore, lessons focus not only on learning mathematical content, but also on helping students develop clearer mathematical communication and more systematic problem-solving approaches.
Depending on each student’s school progress and mathematical background, lessons are adjusted to strengthen weaker areas while gradually preparing students for more advanced mathematics in later IB studies.
Building a Strong Foundation for IBDP Mathematics
A strong IBMYP Mathematics foundation is extremely important for students planning to continue into the IB Diploma Programme, especially for AA HL and AI HL courses.
Many students who struggle later in IBDP Mathematics often have weaknesses in algebraic manipulation, mathematical reasoning, or problem-solving foundations developed during earlier years. Therefore, strengthening these skills during IBMYP can significantly improve students’ confidence and readiness before entering the more demanding IBDP syllabus.
In many cases, students receiving consistent support are able to progress ahead of their school syllabus, giving them more time to consolidate difficult concepts and prepare for future IB Mathematics studies.
