Common Entrance Exam

The Common Entrance Exam (CEE) is a set of standardized assessments taken by students applying for admission to UK independent senior schools at either 11+ (Year 6) or 13+ (Year 8). These exams are designed and regulated by the Independent Schools Examinations Board (ISEB), which represents leading UK independent schools through associations such as the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference (HMC), the Girls’ Schools Association (GSA), and the Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS).

Students typically sit the Common Entrance only after receiving a conditional offer from a senior school, meaning their place is subject to passing the exam. While the questions are set by examiners appointed by ISEB, the marking is often done directly by the admitting senior school or, in some cases, by the student’s prep school.

The exams are usually taken at the candidate’s current school.

  • 11+ Common Entrance (Year 6) includes English, Mathematics, and Science, and is most commonly taken by girls applying to senior schools.

  • 13+ Common Entrance (Year 8) covers the same core subjects, with the addition of optional papers in subjects such as Geography, History, French, and Latin.

Exams may be held during the autumn, spring, or summer term, depending on the school’s admissions calendar.

With years of experience helping students succeed at the 11+ and 13+ levels, Vic provides structured lessons, past paper practice, and proven exam strategies to boost confidence and performance.
